This workshop will discuss the benefits of unschooling gifted children and how to shift one's mindset away from traditional schooling. The focus will be embracing children's unique learning styles and how to support self-directed learning at home and in the world. We will discuss looking at children through a strength based lens with an emphasis on passion-led learning. Overexcitabilities and asynchronicity play a huge role in the development of a gifted child which is often misunderstood and unsupported in a school classroom.

School environments are often a mismatch for gifted children particularly for twice-exceptional and highly to profoundly gifted children. When school doesn't fit your child then alternative education comes to the forefront. Homeschooling is generally a school at home approach with curriculum and the parent as teacher. Unschooling is a different approach that doesn't rely on curriculum or teachers. Unschooling can be described as self-directed learning, passion-led learning, interest-led learning or whole-life learning.

An unschooling philosophy embraces the concept that learning is happening everywhere, children are innately curious and are able to learn independently. Parents take on the role of facilitator and are supportive of a child's unique interests without inserting an adult agenda or societal expectations. Traditional subjects are not the focus in an unschooling approach as the world is filled with myriad interesting ideas to explore beyond the confines of k-12 standards. Unschooling requires a shift in mindset particularly for parents. We will discuss the pitfalls in traditional education and the benefits of embracing an unschooling philosophy. We will explore how to develop an optimal learning environment tailored to each child's unique temperament. This workshop will cover topics like strewing, life-lessons, authenticity, self-actualization, critical thinking and problem solving with an emphasis on child-led learning.
