Wrap & Stitch Basketmaking Using Recycled Materials

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

In the Recycled Materials Basketmaking session, we'll explore the repurposing of core materials that might otherwise cause a problem for the planet, focusing on plastic bags but also playing around with other materials sometimes considered to be trash. We'll wrap our non-traditional core materials with yarn as usual, locking the bags into what will become a beautiful basket and thereby keeping those usually discarded items from being a problem for the planet, potentially forever!

Please, it would be really helpful for you to bring softer plastic bags (such as the ones available at grocery stores, both for general purchases and for containing produce) and other materials that you think might work for basketmaking so that we have enough for everyone to create entire baskets from these alternative cores. Take some time now to stuff these materials into a pocket in your car or backpack so that you won't forget them at Expo time. ;)

Think outside the lines: discarded clothing and holey socks, spent electrical cords, anything that can be coaxed into a long thin shape somehow! I'll bring some fun stuff to work with, too. This session is geared to intermediate basketmakers, but only because it can be tricky sometimes to work with cores that resist molding into strand shape.
